Audio Books For People Who Don’t Read - Vol. 1

I am not a reader

I loved books as a child but post elementary school the desire to pick up a book for pleasure faded.

I can't sit in 1 position, I can't find time, ADHD, dyslexia, and honestly I’m just more interested in other hobbies. There's no reason for embarrassment, for some people reading isn't fun.

However stories are fun. And the knowledge books provide is fun - so we must find a way.

Introducing - the beauty of an audiobook. Don’t like reading? Audiobooks.  Promise yourself you’d finish a few more books this year? Audiobooks! They count.

A good audiobook is made of what reading is not - engaging voice, a run-time under 5 hours, available whenever I choose, and it doesn’t bring stress to my life.

This list may work for those who read for pleasure as well but it is designed for those who need a book without all the other stuff.

These books were chosen because -
  • They were short
  • The sample did not annoy me (I can’t stand a computer generated voice)
  • They were available now on Libby*.

I hope you enjoy them too.

*Get a library card! There is no excuse. They offer so many benefits that are not checking out books - free apps for audiobooks, movies, television, language learning - free museum tickets, state park passes, workshops, and so much more.

The Book of Delights by Ross Gay

Length  - 5 hours

An exercise in delighting for you; these single day essayettes written through one year focus on my favorite topic - enjoying things. Gay explores and shares what he finds delight in while encouraging you to do the same.

The stream of consciousness writing flows as the author reads his own words - my favorite with audiobooks. Metaphors twirl you through delightful yet unspectacular moments the author probably wouldn’t remember if not written down.

I could not take my earbuds out, it’s hard to find an author who can keep you mesmerized while describing a dream they had.

Perfect for a day alone - drinking coffee, vintage shopping, walking through a park - doing the things you love and finding all the delight.

The Swedish Art of Ageing Well: Life Wisdom from Someone who Will (probably) Die Before You by Margareta Magnusson

Length - 4 hours however I listened on 1.25 speed

Lessons on simplifying your life shared by a woman in her 80’s looking back on the culmination of her life without waste to worry if you agree with her. Honest and soft conversations that remind me of lovely afternoons with a friend without any expectations of each other.

A reminder that joy is often found in the small things and wearing your favorite pattern might be one of the biggest joys of all. Practical advice on aging and caring for our planet that has sat with me since finishing.

Perfect for an afternoon spent tidying up, working in the garden, or performing self care.

A Guide to Midwestern Conversation by Taylor Kay Phillips

Length - 3 hours

A lighthearted listen and a little learning experience. A guide to the states and the language (and sub-language) of the Midwest.

Great for learning fun facts to impress your friends on your next road trip through the midwest. Great for your next flight that passes over the Midwest. Great if you want to remember that kindness is strength and we should all laugh at ourselves a little more.

A wonderful lesson in manners that has me questioning everything - Should I be bringing more hostess gifts? I was suppose to return that tupperware? I don’t know if I’ve ever written a thank you note…

A perfect listen when you need a little extra laughter and humanity.
