Simple Art: Scrap Journaling
I love a simple craft - something that flows and lets the mind meditate. The easier the better - a project that can be picked up and put down and can be made to varying levels of skill depending on your mood.
One of my favorites this summer has been Scrap Journaling.
I’ve always loved collages - they are a great way to create beautiful art when you are not confident in drawing or painting. I find collages change so much throughout the process - the end result is never what you first imagine. It gives you so much creative freedom with very little requirements.
Supplies -
Any journal - a used one is great since you will cover the pages anyway
Scissors - a scalpel can be helpful but its not necessary
Tape roller - you could use glue but this is so clean and holds nicely
Any magazines, newspaper, random paper, wrapping paper, pictures, patterns, receipts, packaging, stickers, envelopes, old letters, used stamps, bad report cards, buttons, paint, markers, crayons, pencils, pens, jewels, ribbon, washi tape, fabric, leaves, flowers, feathers, ferns, or other objects that speak to you.
Creating -
Start with an idea - maybe a word, event, place, or feeling. Start collecting pieces that you think you’d like to use and laying them out.
I like to start cutting out smaller pieces at this point so you can really see a layout. I save gluing for closer to the end - the rollers are nice because you can apply a little so things stay in place but you aren’t committed to the placement yet.
Relax and keep going - the fun thing is only you will know when you’re done.
If you are finding this activity stressful try to simplify - less cutting or use only stickers. Simple art should not be stressful.
